Talking about habits and routines

My First Month in Munich: Talking About My Routine (and My Mistakes!)

Okay, so, let’s be honest. Moving to Munich was… intense. The sheer size of everything, the politeness (it’s almost overwhelming!), and the fact that I now spend a significant portion of my day trying to decipher vending machine instructions were all a bit much at first. But, I’m slowly getting into a rhythm, and one of the biggest things helping me feel more settled has been figuring out how to talk about my daily life – my Gewohnheiten – with the people I meet.

The Initial Confusion: “Was machst du normalerweise?”

The first few weeks, I really struggled with this simple question: “Was machst du normalerweise?” (What do you normally do?). My brain short-circuited! I’d start rambling about my sleep schedule (which was, admittedly, completely chaotic), my attempts at learning German (which mostly involved staring blankly at Duolingo), and my desperate search for decent coffee. I was so focused on covering everything that I didn’t actually communicate anything clearly.

I remember one conversation with my colleague, Klaus. He asked me this, and I blurted out, “Ich… ich gehe… ich gehe zum… zum Licht… und… und ich trinke Kaffee!” (I… I go… I go to the… to the light… and… and I drink coffee!). Klaus looked utterly bewildered. He patiently explained that he meant, “What’s your usual routine like?” – you know, work, maybe gym, evening plans. It was a huge wake-up call.

Essential Phrases for Talking About Routines

So, I started building a little toolkit. Here are some phrases that have been incredibly useful:

  • “Ich stehe normalerweise um… Uhr auf.” (I usually wake up at… o’clock.) – “Ich stehe normalerweise um 7 Uhr auf.” (I usually wake up at 7 am.)
  • “Ich gehe zur Arbeit um… Uhr.” (I go to work at… o’clock.) – “Ich gehe zur Arbeit um 8 Uhr.” (I go to work at 8 am.)
  • “Ich esse Frühstück um… Uhr.” (I eat breakfast at… o’clock.) – “Ich esse Frühstück um 8:30 Uhr.” (I eat breakfast at 8:30 am.)
  • “Ich gehe danach ins Fitnessstudio.” (I go there afterwards to the gym.) – “Ich gehe danach ins Fitnessstudio.” (I go there afterwards to the gym.)
  • “Am Wochenende mache ich oft…” (On the weekend I often do…) – “Am Wochenende mache ich oft Spaziergänge im Englischen Garten.” (On the weekend I often take walks in the English Garden.)
  • “Ich lese normalerweise vor dem Schlafengehen.” (I normally read before going to bed.) – “Ich lese normalerweise vor dem Schlafengehen.” (I normally read before going to bed.)

Small Mistakes, Big Learning Opportunities

I’ve definitely made some embarrassing gaffes. Last week, I was telling a group of people at the local Kneipe (pub) that I “normalerweise gehe nach der Arbeit zum Schwimmen” (I normally go swimming after work). They all stared at me, completely confused. It turns out, “schwimmen” is less common than “ins Fitnessstudio gehen” (going to the gym) when talking about a typical weekday evening routine. Oops!

Another time, I tried to explain my weekend plans to my landlord, Herr Schmidt. I said, “Ich gehe zu meiner Familie.” (I go to my family.) He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Aber was machen Sie denn da?” (But what do you do there?). I realized I hadn’t specified what I did with my family – just the fact that I visited them. “Ich treffe meine Eltern und meine Großeltern” (I meet my parents and grandparents) sounded much better!

Building a Realistic Picture

The key, I’m learning, is to be honest, but also to be specific. Don’t just say “Ich gehe arbeiten” (I go to work). Explain where you go to work, what you do there, and when you go. It’s also okay to admit when your routine is a bit chaotic! People appreciate the honesty, and it gives them something to actually talk to you about.

Right now, my routine is a mix of trying to integrate into German culture, awkwardly attempting to speak German, and desperately searching for a decent pastry shop. It’s messy, it’s challenging, and it’s…well, it’s real. And I’m starting to feel like I’m actually building a life here, one Gewohnheit at a time.

Vocabulary Boost:

  • Gewohnheiten – Habits/routines
  • normalerweise – normally
  • Was machst du normalerweise? – What’s your usual routine like?
  • Kneipe – Pub
  • Treffen – To meet
  • Familie – Family
