My First Few Months: Talking TV in Germany

Okay, so here I am, three months into living in Berlin. It’s amazing, terrifying, and honestly, a huge learning curve. I knew German would be hard, but I hadn’t really factored in how much of everyday life is just… conversation. And right now, my conversations are mostly about Fernsehen – television. I figured, let’s start with something relatively straightforward, right? I’ve been trying to get better at understanding what people are saying on TV too, and it’s a mess!

The Initial Confusion: “Serie” vs. “Show”

The first week, I kept saying “Ich schaue eine Serie” and people would look at me like I was speaking a completely alien language. Then I realised… they weren’t talking about a Serien – that’s the proper word for a TV series, you know, like Stranger Things or Dark. They were talking about a Show. I felt so silly! My German friend, Max, explained, “Ach, Serie is like… a really long episode. Show is more general, like ‘the TV show’.” It’s so weird how different the words are. I’m still getting used to it.

Ordering Streaming Services – A Nightmare

Then came the quest to actually watch anything. I wanted to try Amazon Prime and Netflix, but asking for them in German was… chaotic. I went into Media Markt (the electronics store) and tried to ask, “Haben Sie Amazon Prime?” The guy just stared at me, and another customer overheard and burst out laughing. Apparently, “Haben Sie” is really formal.

I finally managed to ask someone, “Ich suche Amazon Prime, bitte?” and they pointed me to a counter. I then proceeded to get utterly lost in the options. They kept talking about “Abonnement” (subscription) and “Werbung” (advertising). I just wanted to watch Rick and Morty. It was overwhelming! I realised I needed a simpler approach. Now I just say, “Ich möchte Netflix.” Much better.

Common Phrases & Vocabulary

Here are a few phrases I’ve actually used (and hopefully, understood):

• “Was läuft gerade?” – What’s on TV right now? (This is essential.)
• “Ich schaue gerade…” – I’m watching…
• “Das ist gut!” – That’s good! (Used when someone recommends something)
• “Kannst du das bitte wiederholen?” – Can you repeat that, please? (I’ve used this a lot.)
• “Ich verstehe nicht.” – I don’t understand. (Another frequent user!)
• “Die Bildschirme sind verdammt teuer!” – (Said after realizing streaming subscriptions add up!) – It’s a common complaint, actually.

A Typical Evening with Max

Last night, I was over at Max’s place. We were ordering pizza and watching a German Sitcom called How Carl Works.

Max: “Schau mal, How Carl Works ist total witzig! Hast du die schon gesehen?” (Look, How Carl Works is totally funny! Have you seen it?)

Me: “Ja, ein bisschen. Ich mag es nicht so gut, ehrlich gesagt. Zu viel Lärm!” (Yes, a little. I don’t like it so much, honestly. Too much noise!)

Max: “Ach, du bist ein Drama-Queen! Aber wenn du willst, können wir später Netflix schauen. Ich habe gerade The Crown aufgenommen.” (Oh, you’re a Drama Queen! But if you want, we can watch Netflix later. I’ve just recorded The Crown.)

Mistakes and Corrections

I’ve made so many mistakes. Once, I tried to say “Ich möchte eine Pause von der Serie” (I would like a break from the series) and the shopkeeper just blinked at me. Apparently, “Pause” can mean something completely different in this context! He gently corrected me, “Nein, nein, Sie möchten eine Pause von dem Fernsehen!” (No, no, you want a break from television!). Ugh.

I also accidentally asked a waiter, “Wie ist die Serie?” (How is the series?) when I just wanted to know if the food was good. He looked incredibly confused. I quickly realised my mistake and apologized profusely.

My Next Steps

I’m starting to feel a bit more confident, but I still have so much to learn. My goal is to be able to confidently discuss my favourite shows, understand the different streaming options, and, you know, not completely embarrass myself when asking for help. I’m planning to start watching more German-language shows with subtitles to improve my listening skills. Maybe even try to understand Dark without subtitles one day… wish me luck!
