Talking about media consumption habits

My First Few Months Talking About TV and Movies in Germany

Okay, so here I am, six months into living in Berlin, and honestly, I’m still feeling my way around. I’d always dreamed of living in Europe, especially Germany, but it’s one thing to read about it and quite another to actually talk about it. And let me tell you, talking about TV and movies is a surprisingly tricky area. It’s not just about saying “Ich mag Stranger Things” – there’s a whole cultural thing going on.

The Initial Confusion: “Netflix” vs. “Streaming”

The first few weeks were… embarrassing. I’d excitedly tell someone I loved Netflix, and they’d look at me like I’d just spoken Martian. Eventually, a colleague, Mark, explained. “Netflix ist Premium,” he said, gesturing with his hands. “Wir hier machen eher Streaming. Das ist, wenn du Filme und Serien über einen Anbieter wie Amazon Prime oder Disney+ siehst.” (Netflix is premium. We tend to do streaming here. That’s when you watch films and series via a provider like Amazon Prime or Disney+.) I felt like such an idiot! The word “Streaming” felt so… vague. I started to realize Germans are much more specific about how they watch things.

Ordering Takeaway with a Recommendation

I went to a new Imbiss (snack stand) last week, and I wanted to impress the guy behind the counter, Thomas. I wanted to order eine Currywurst (a curry sausage – it’s a huge deal here) and also ask for a recommendation.

“Entschuldigung,” I said, “Haben Sie gute Filme, die Sie empfehlen können? Ich mag Komödien.” (Excuse me, do you have good movies you can recommend? I like comedies.)

He paused, thinking, and then said, “Ach, Filme… Ich habe gerade ‘Der Staat gegen Fritz’ gesehen. Ist ganz gut, aber vielleicht nicht so lustig.” (Ah, movies… I just watched ‘The State vs. Fritz’. It’s quite good, but maybe not so funny.) He then launched into a description of the film – a political satire – that I didn’t fully understand because of the German terminology. I nodded and smiled, pretending I was following along perfectly. I quickly learned to just say “Ich mag Filme mit guter Story” (I like films with a good story) when I wasn’t sure I could keep up with a detailed discussion.

“Warum schauen Sie das?” – Understanding Genre Preferences

This is a big one. I mentioned once that I was watching Tatort (a German crime drama – it’s incredibly popular). My friend, Lena, looked genuinely baffled. “Warum schauen Sie das?” (Why are you watching that?) she asked, clearly perplexed. “Es ist ja total düster und beängstigend!” (It’s totally dark and scary!) Turns out, Tatort is a staple of German television, and a lot of people enjoy the suspense. I realized I needed to be more careful about how I described what I watched, and be prepared for some raised eyebrows.

Useful Phrases to Know

Here are a few phrases that have been incredibly helpful:

  • “Ich schaue gerne Serien.” (I like to watch series.) – This is a generally understood phrase.
  • “Ich mag den Spannungsgrad.” (I like the level of suspense.) – Useful when talking about crime dramas.
  • “Ich brauche eine gute Geschichte.” (I need a good story.) – A safe bet when you’re unsure of the genre.
  • “Was schauen Sie gerade?” (What are you watching right now?) – Always a good way to start a conversation and see what’s popular.

Misunderstandings and Learning

I still make mistakes, and I’m definitely not fluent. But the key, I’m starting to realize, isn’t about knowing all the specific German terms for every film and series. It’s about being open, asking questions, and accepting that people have different tastes and expectations. I’m learning that the conversations about media consumption here are really about sharing experiences and connecting with others. And honestly, that’s a pretty fantastic thing. Ich bin dabei! (I’m getting there!)
