Talking about sports and exercise

My First Steps Talking About Sport in Germany

Okay, deep breath. It’s been six months since I moved to Munich, and honestly, the language is still the biggest hurdle. I’m slowly, painfully, getting better, though. And today, I want to talk about something that actually makes me feel a little bit more confident – talking about sports and exercise. It feels… practical. It’s something I actually do, so it’s easier to connect with than, say, ordering complicated pastries.

The Initial Panic: “Was ist das?”

The first few times I tried to mention going to the gym, I just froze. I knew a few words, but forming a sentence felt impossible. I walked into a little sports shop (they’re everywhere!) and wanted to ask about running shoes. I mumbled something to the incredibly friendly shop assistant, Klaus, and he looked at me completely bewildered.

“Entschuldigung? Was ist das?” (Excuse me? What is that?) he asked, pointing to my confused expression.

I blurted out, “Ich… ich möchte… Laufschuhe… kaufen?” (I… I want… running shoes… to buy?)

He smiled patiently and said, “Ah, Joggschuhe! Sehr gut!” (Ah, running shoes! Very good!). That was my first successful attempt! I realized I needed to simplify things. And learn more specific vocabulary.

Essential German Phrases for Fitness

Here are some phrases that have actually been useful:

  • Ich gehe ins Fitnessstudio. (I go to the gym.) – This is a lifesaver.
  • Ich gehe joggen. (I go jogging.) – A simple way to talk about running.
  • Ich spiele Fußball. (I play football/soccer.) – Always gets a reaction.
  • Ich schwimme. (I swim.) – I actually swim in the Isar river sometimes! It’s a bit chilly, but…
  • Ich mache Yoga. (I do yoga.) – I’ve joined a class, which is fantastic – but I’m still terrible at the downward dog!
  • Wie oft machst du Sport? (How often do you do sport?) – Perfect for starting a conversation.
  • Wie ist dein Lieblingssport? (What is your favourite sport?) – A great way to find out what others are interested in.

My First Gym Conversation – A Slight Mishap

Last week, I finally went to a proper gym. It was intimidating – huge weights, lots of people grunting. I tried to be polite and asked the receptionist, Sarah, for help.

“Entschuldigen Sie, ich bin neu hier. Können Sie mir helfen?” (Excuse me, I’m new here. Can you help me?)

She was incredibly helpful. I asked, “Wo finde ich das Laufband?” (Where do I find the treadmill?)

I pointed vaguely in a direction and she looked confused. “Das Laufband? Du meinst das Cardio-Gerät?” (The treadmill? Do you mean the cardio machine?)

I realized I’d used the wrong word! “Ja, ja, das Cardio-Gerät! Super!” (Yes, yes, the cardio machine! Super!) It’s these little moments that make you feel so embarrassed, but also motivate you to keep learning.

Talking About My Routine

I’ve started trying to explain my weekly routine to people. It’s surprisingly difficult to be specific.

“Ich gehe normalerweise zweimal pro Woche ins Fitnessstudio. An den Wochenenden gehe ich oft joggen im Englischen Garten.” (I usually go to the gym twice a week. On weekends, I often go jogging in the Englischer Garten.)

I’ve noticed people often ask, “Und danach?” (And then what?) – meaning, what do I do after? I often just fumble for words.

A Helpful Tip: Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Seriously, don’t. I’ve made so many mistakes, and most people are incredibly patient and understanding. I once asked someone if they used “ein Schwimmbad” (a swimming pool) for exercise (apparently, it’s more about relaxing!). They laughed and explained the difference. It felt awful at the time, but it’s a valuable learning experience.

Moving Forward – My Goals

My goal now is to start using these phrases more confidently. I’m aiming to actually understand people when they ask me about my sport routine, not just mumble responses. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll even be able to hold a proper conversation about the Bundesliga without completely freezing up.

Wish me luck! Viel Erfolg! (Good luck!)

Would you like me to:

  • Expand on a specific aspect (e.g., gym vocabulary, conversation starters)?
  • Create a scenario with a dialogue focusing on a particular sport?
