Discussing healthy routines

My First Month Talking About Gesund: German Health Routines

Okay, so, honestly, moving to Munich has been… a lot. The language, the pace of life, the beer – it’s amazing, but also overwhelming. I’m still getting used to everything, and let’s be real, my German isn’t exactly fluent yet. But I’m trying, and I really want to be able to talk about everyday things, like my health, so I can actually live here. That’s why I’ve been focusing on learning vocabulary related to healthy routines – it felt like a really practical starting point.

First Encounter: The Apotheke Conversation

The first real hurdle was going to the Apotheke (pharmacy). I needed some ibuprofen – my head was pounding after a particularly long day navigating the U-Bahn. I walked in, and the pharmacist, a very nice man named Herr Schmidt, asked, “Was kann ich für Sie tun?” (What can I do for you?). I panicked and blurted out, “Ich brauche Ibuprofen!” (I need ibuprofen!).

He smiled and said, “Wie viel Ibuprofen möchten Sie?” (How much ibuprofen would you like?). I fumbled and said, “Zwei… Tabletten?” (Two… tablets?). He corrected me gently. “Nein, nein, Sie möchten zwei Packungen Ibuprofen,” (No, no, you would like two packets of ibuprofen) – and explained that ‘Tabletten’ is just one tablet, and you buy them in packs. It was a tiny thing, but it made me realise how important it was to be precise. I learned a really useful phrase: “Ich brauche… [medicine name] in einer Packung.” (I need… [medicine name] in a packet).

Talking About My Morgenroutine (Morning Routine)

Speaking of routines, I’ve been trying to talk about my Morgenroutine (morning routine) with my flatmates, Alice and Luke. It’s a bit of a disaster honestly. I usually roll out of bed, grab a coffee, and then stare at my laptop until I have to go to work.

Yesterday, I tried to explain it to Alice. I said, “Ich stehe spät auf. Ich trinke Kaffee, aber ich mache keinen Sport.” (I wake up late. I drink coffee, but I don’t do any sports).

Alice looked concerned and said, “Das ist nicht gut! Sie müssen etwas mehr Bewegung machen!” (That’s not good! You need to do more exercise!).

Luke, who is a bit more laid-back, added, “Ja, vielleicht ein Spaziergang?” (Yes, maybe a walk?).

I felt a little embarrassed. I realised I needed to learn more ways to express this. I’ve been practicing: “Ich bin noch nicht gewohnt, aber ich versuche, jeden Tag ein bisschen Sport zu machen.” (I’m not yet used to it, but I’m trying to do a little sport every day.)

Key Vocabulary for Healthy Living

Here’s a little list of words I’ve found really helpful:

  • Gesund: Healthy
  • Sport: Sport/Exercise
  • Ernährung: Diet/Nutrition
  • Obst: Fruit
  • Gemüse: Vegetables
  • Wasser: Water
  • Regelmäßig: Regularly
  • Ein gesundes Frühstück: A healthy breakfast (Ein gesundes Frühstück)
  • Die Bewegung: Exercise (Die Bewegung)

Asking About Someone’s Routine – “Wie sieht Ihre Routine aus?”

I’ve been asking people, “Wie sieht Ihre Routine aus?” (What is your routine like?). It’s a really common question, and I’ve discovered that people’s routines vary so much. My colleague, Steven, told me he goes to the gym every morning before work. “Ich gehe ins Fitnessstudio um 7 Uhr morgens,” (I go to the gym at 7 am) he said proudly. I almost felt bad about my chaotic mornings!

Small Steps, Big Progress

I’m learning slowly, but I’m starting to feel more comfortable talking about my health in German. It’s still tricky, and I definitely make mistakes (like buying the wrong amount of medication!), but I’m getting there. The biggest thing is that I’m actually using the language, and that’s making all the difference. I’m planning to keep a little notebook and write down new phrases and vocabulary I learn. Maybe one day I’ll even manage a proper conversation about my gesunde Ernährung (healthy diet) without completely panicking!

For now, I’ll stick with my coffee, a little bit of walking, and a lot of trying to say the right things. “Ich lerne Deutsch, und ich werde gesund!” (I’m learning German, and I’m going to be healthy!)
